This Domaine Gonon is a five-generation family estate in Vergisson, farming 14 hectares at the foot of the Roche de Solutre in the Maconnais. The 2023 Macon-Bussieres is 100 percent Chardonnay from Bussieres' limestone soils, 13 percent alcohol, drinking beautifully now with five years of life ahead. Family-farmed white Burgundy at thirty dollars barely exists anymore. Here it is.

Ripe peach and yellow fruit on an aromatic nose, pale yellow in the glass. Clean and fruit-forward with a strong limestone mineral spine and impressive persistence.

Classic matches for Chardonnay: Roast chicken, lobster or crab with butter, corn dishes, soft creamy cheeses.

The Gonon family has farmed in Vergisson for five generations, 14 hectares beneath the Roche de Solutre, the great limestone cliff of the Maconnais. The Bussieres fruit grows on limestone, which explains the mineral drive.
