Donna Laura - Chianti Riserva - ‘Alteo’ - 2019

Donna Laura is the label of vintner Lia Tolaini-Banville, and Alteo takes its name from her two sons, Alessandro and Matteo. It's 100% Sangiovese, grown around 200 meters elevation on lime-and-clay soil, and aged as a Chianti Riserva. Antonio Galloni at Vinous scored the 2019 at 90 points, calling it juicy and easy to like. Open it with red-sauce Italian food or on its own on a Tuesday. It drinks well young without needing to be babied.

Clear ruby red. Wild rose, black currant and sour black cherry on the nose, with fennel, incense and dried leaf notes. Juicy dark red cherry and spice on the palate, soft tannins, a chocolate undertone, fine balanced structure.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

Donna Laura is run by vintner Lia Tolaini-Banville; Alteo is named for her sons Alessandro and Matteo. The wine is 100% Sangiovese grown around 200 meters elevation on lime-and-clay soil with a good share of stones, within Tuscany's Chianti zone.
