Encubierto comes from Finca La Escarcha, a family project Santiago Reta started in 2004 on raw scrubland in La Arboleda, Tupungato, in the Uco Valley. Italian winemaker Giuseppe Franceschini oversees the wines. Worth knowing: Encubierto Tinto isn't a straight Malbec, it's a blend, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec and 20% Syrah, named for the mischievous fox that wanders the vineyards at night. Deep, intense red with blue undertones, plum and floral notes on the nose, light and easy on the palate.
Intense red color with blue tints. Delicate nose of plum, flowers and spice. Light, straightforward palate with good persistence and a soft finish. Other vintages show tobacco, black pepper and ripe black fruit after French oak aging.
Classic matches for Malbec: Steak. Also steak. Grilled anything, empanadas, hard cheeses.
Santiago Reta started Finca La Escarcha in 2004 on undeveloped land in La Arboleda, Tupungato, in Mendoza's Uco Valley. The 25-hectare estate is planted mainly to Malbec and Cabernet, advised by Italian winemaker Giuseppe Franceschini, and produces small, limited-batch lots.
