Fess Parker - The Big Easy - 2019

Fess Parker played Davy Crockett for a generation of TV kids, then bought the 700-acre Foxen Canyon Ranch in Santa Barbara County in 1988 and planted vines with his son Eli the next year. The Big Easy is the family's Rhone-style statement red. The 2019 is 62% Syrah, 24% Petite Sirah and 14% Grenache, dark and peppery with real grip and a generous core. Pour it at a cookout and watch it vanish first.
Smoked meat, dark fruit and pepper dust on the nose. Blackberry paste, dried thyme, cracked pepper and a chalky edge on the palate. Soft tannins, candied violet, caramel on a long finish.
Smoked beef ribs, pepper-crusted ribeye, lamb kebabs straight off the grill.
The Parker family farms more than 1,500 acres of Central Coast vineyards. The Foxen Canyon tasting room opened in 1992 and the winery is still family run, with Eli Parker leading winemaking and vineyard operations.
