Finca La Mata - Ribera Del Duero - 2021
$30.99
Finca La Mata is a joint project between Isaac Fernández, one of Ribera del Duero's most respected winemakers, and importer Aurelio Cabestrero, who has family ties to a winery in the DO. They started in 2010, and this bottling is named for the single old-vine vineyard it comes from. The 2021 is 100% Tinta del Pais off 60-plus-year-old bush vines at 900 meters, hand-harvested, fermented with native yeast, and aged 10 months in French and American oak. Wine Enthusiast scored it 92 points; Wine Spectator gave it 91. Only 1,700 cases made, 1,500 imported.
Black cherry, cassis and pomegranate with graphite, wild herbs, licorice and a touch of cigar ash. Full-bodied and dry, light but well-integrated tannins, black currant and dark chocolate lingering on the finish.
Grilled lamb chops, aged Manchego, or a well-charred ribeye.
Fruit comes from a single old-vine site, 60-to-85-year-old Tinta del Pais bush vines at 900 meters on sandy clay and gravel. Hand harvested and hand-sorted twice, fermented with native yeast, then aged 10 months in 80% French and 20% American oak.
