Hindsight Vineyards is a small Calistoga producer started in 2011 by three partners who met over a shared love of wine at a charity tasting. The Retrospective blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot in a Right Bank Bordeaux style, made under longtime winemaker Michael Weis. Garnet in color, softer in tannin than a straight Cabernet, it's the bottle for the table when you want Napa fruit without Napa weight. Pull it out for a ribeye.

Delicate red and dried-fruit aromas open into a garnet-colored glass with moderate tannin and soft red fruit. Balanced acidity keeps it generous and approachable rather than heavy, with a clean, easy finish.

Grilled, well-marbled ribeye — the producer's own pairing call, and a good one.

Founded in 2011 by Seth Gersch, Dr. Alisa Gean and William Boykin, Hindsight built its Calistoga estate on the idea that Napa Valley shouldn't require a trust fund. Michael Weis, a nearly 50-year veteran winemaker, has directed the cellar since 2020.
