Klinker Brick - Old Vine Zinfandel - 2020

Klinker Brick's Old Vine Zinfandel comes from the Felten family's home turf in Lodi, where they've farmed grapes for six generations. This bottling pulls fruit from fourteen different vineyard blocks ranging from 35 to 110 years old, the kind of gnarled, low-yielding vines that concentrate flavor instead of diluting it. Wine Enthusiast gave the 2020 a 90-point score. It's built for grilling season and fire pits both, a Zin that actually tastes like Lodi instead of just alcohol and jam.

Black cherry, black plum, bramble and forest floor, with black pepper, charred wood and a streak of graphite. Chalky tannins, modest acidity, and enough alcohol warmth to remind you it's Lodi Zin, not claret.

Built for the grill: burgers, barbecue, anything with char. Also good by a fire pit on a cold night.

The Felten family has farmed in Lodi for six generations, first selling grapes to home winemakers during Prohibition. They founded Klinker Brick in 2000 after decades growing fruit for other wineries, and still farm two dozen individual old-vine blocks themselves.
