La Rose Pourpre - Pauillac - 2009

$78.99

La Rose Pourpre is the boundary-pushing cuvée from La Rose Pauillac, the appellation's cooperative cellar, first made the same year as this vintage. It flips the usual Pauillac formula: Petit Verdot leads at 65%, backed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, aged twelve months in French oak. The grapes come from a half-hectare "secret garden" farmed by just three of the co-op's winemakers. A left-bank red for someone who wants Pauillac structure built around an unusual blend.

Blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant on the nose, with a purplish-red color and crimson rim. Fresh and round on the palate, firm structure, tannins that soften with air. 13.5% alcohol.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

The fruit comes from a single half-hectare "secret garden" plot within La Rose Pauillac's holdings, tended by three of the cooperative's winemakers as a self-contained micro-cuvée rather than blended into the main label.
