Lamborn Family Vineyards farms eight acres near the top of Howell Mountain at 2,200 feet, organically, and has grown Zinfandel there without interruption since 1982 — one of Napa's oldest Zin sites still in continuous production. Heidi Barrett, the winemaker behind Screaming Eagle, has made the wine since 1997. The 2018 is dense and structured, built on mountain fruit and medium-toast American oak, for someone who wants old-school Napa Zinfandel with real backbone, not a jammy fruit bomb.

Blackberry, tart cherry, plum and forest fruit aromas with anise, white pepper and a mineral edge. Thick and concentrated on the palate with mountain tannin and a coffee edge from the oak.

Braised short ribs or a peppery dry-aged steak — this wine wants char and fat to match its tannin.

The Lamborn family has farmed this Howell Mountain site since 1969, planting Zinfandel in 1982; four generations have kept the eight-acre estate 100% estate-grown and organically farmed, one of the smallest and oldest family operations on the mountain.
