Leone de Castris - ‘Medaglione’ - Primitivo - 2019

One of Italy's oldest wineries, running continuously in Salice Salentino since 1665. Leone de Castris was the first estate in the region to bottle its own wine, back in 1925, and in 1943 created Five Roses, the first Italian rosé ever sold in a bottle. This Primitivo, labeled Il Medaglione, comes from the same Salento heat that makes the grape so ripe and generous. Deep, plush and built for red sauce and grilled meat, it's proof that 350 years of history doesn't have to carry a trophy price tag.

Deep ruby red, with black cherry, toasted fennel seed and violet on the nose. Medium-bodied and plush, dark berry fruit backed by juicy acidity and velvety tannin, with a twist of clove and tangerine on the finish.

Roasted meats, aged pecorino, sausage and peppers.

Leone de Castris has been making wine in Salice Salentino since 1665, one of the oldest continuously run estates in Italy, founded by descendants of Spanish viceroys sent to govern Puglia. The family pioneered estate bottling in the region in 1925 and, in 1943, released Five Roses, the first bottled rosé made in Italy.
