Malvasia Vin Liastos 2012
$58.99
Monemvasia Winery resurrected the wine that made Malmsey famous: Malvasia from Laconia in the southern Peloponnese, named for the medieval trading port of Monemvasia. The Monemvasia grape leads the blend with Kydonitsa and Assyrtiko, sun-dried for about twelve days, fermented cool in stainless, then aged two years in used French barriques. The 2012 is only the second vintage of the revival. Liquid caramel with a historian's pedigree, and one of the best cheese-course wines in the shop.
Tawny amber. Chestnut cream, dried apricot, sultana and honey with walnut, coffee and toffee apple. Dense and syrupy yet balanced enough to stay elegant. Very long.
Baklava, Stilton or aged kefalotyri, crème brûlée, a bowl of roasted walnuts.
The Tsimbidi family's Monemvasia Winery farms indigenous Laconian varieties and led the revival of the region's historic Malvasia, now protected under Greece's PDO Monemvasia-Malvasia.
