Marchesi di Barolo - Barbera - 'Maraia' - 2020

Marchesi di Barolo is the oldest continuously operating winery in the town of Barolo, its history running back to Marchesa Giulia Falletti in the early 1800s, credited with helping shape modern Barolo itself. The Abbona family bought the estate in 1929, and six generations later still run it, now farming over 200 hectares across Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. Maraia is their Barbera del Monferrato: dark ruby, fresh wild berry and sour cherry fruit, full-bodied and balanced. A Barolo house's everyday red, made for roasted meats and Tuesday dinner, not for the cellar.

Brilliant dark ruby red. Fresh, intense nose of wild berries, red currant and sour black cherry, a light touch of vanilla and toasted oak. Full-bodied, warm and balanced on the palate, juicy with a tart edge.

Marchesi di Barolo's roots trace to Marchesa Giulia Falletti in the early 19th century. Pietro Abbona bought the estate in 1929; today Ernesto and Anna Abbona, the fifth generation, farm over 200 hectares across Langhe, Roero and Monferrato using sustainable practices. Maraia comes from the house's Monferrato Barbera vineyards, outside the home Barolo sites.
