Marciano - 'M' - Red Blend - 2018

Maurice Marciano, the Guess co-founder, revived a St. Helena property with roots back to 1872 and had David Abreu plant the estate's ten-acre vineyard in 2007 across 23 separate blocks. The M bottling is an even split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the 2018 is built for the cellar, not the table this month. This is a deep, structured Napa red for someone who wants to tuck bottles away and forget about them for a while.

Deep purple-black. Blackcurrant pastille, redcurrant jelly, kirsch and pencil shavings, with dusty soil and wet stone underneath. Full-bodied, concentrated cassis and blueberry fruit, fine-grained tannins, long mineral finish. Needs 7 to 8 years to shed its baby fat.

Marciano Estate sits on ground first planted in 1872 by the Bourn family; Maurice Marciano restored the St. Helena property and brought in David Abreu to plant the current ten-acre vineyard in 2007, laid out in 23 discrete blocks of Bordeaux varieties.
