Michele Chiarlo - ‘Le Orme’ - Barbera D’Asti - 2021

Michele Chiarlo has been a defining name in Piedmont since 1956, and Le Orme is where the estate channels fruit from four of its own Barbera vineyards in the Nizza area, including the prized La Court site. Ten days of skin maceration and a rest in large French oak casks build real structure into an everyday Barbera. Wine Enthusiast gave it 92 points. This is Italian red for a Tuesday that also holds up on the good china.

Ruby red with violet edges. Juicy plum, macerated blackberry and purple flower on the nose, dusted with spice. The palate turns to tart cherry and wild herbs, closing on roasted earth and anise.

Pair it with Sunday gravy, grilled sausage, or a hard salami plate — it cuts through fat without bullying the food.

Le Orme draws from all four of Michele Chiarlo's Barbera estates in Nizza, including La Court, source of the winery's top-tier Barbera. Grapes see 10 days of skin contact in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then age in large French oak casks for 3 months — about 16 months total before release.
