MontePiazzo Serego Alighieri - Valpolicella Classico Superiore - 2019
$65.00
Montepiazzo is the entry-level red from Serego Alighieri, the Valpolicella estate that's belonged to Dante Alighieri's direct descendants since the 1300s and is now run in partnership with Masi. Made from Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, this Valpolicella Classico Superiore carries real history without an Amarone price tag. Good house red for a Tuesday pasta night or anyone curious what a 650-year-old vineyard tastes like.
Deep ruby with a violet sheen. Earthy notes of beet and rust give way to blackberry, black truffle, marasca cherry, cinnamon and clove. Dark berry fruit on the palate with firm, drying tannins through the finish.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Serego Alighieri is the oldest continuously farmed estate in Valpolicella, purchased in 1353 by Dante's son Pietro and still owned by his descendants, now double-barrelled Serego Alighieri after a 16th-century marriage into the Serego family. Since the 1970s the estate has partnered with the Masi group on winemaking and distribution. Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara make up the blend.
