Montes Alpha - 'M' - 2018

Alpha M was Chile's shot across the bow. First made in 1996 and named for Montes co-founder Douglas Murray, it set the benchmark for Chilean icon wine from the bowl-shaped, south-facing hillsides of Apalta in Colchagua. The 2018 is 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in French oak, 80 percent of it new. First-growth ambition at a fraction of Bordeaux money. Cellar it, or decant it hard.

Blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and fig with rosemary, thyme, vanilla, cinnamon and dark chocolate. Full body, firm fleshy tannins, cedar and earth underneath. Drinks well through 2035.

Vina Montes was founded in 1988 by winemaker Aurelio Montes and three partners. The house pioneered premium Chilean exports and hillside planting in Apalta, and Alpha M remains its flagship.
