Morlet Coteaux Nobles 2021 Pinot Noir

$180.00

Luc Morlet grows this Pinot Noir on a hillside in Fort Ross-Seaview, on the second ridge in from the Pacific at 1,350 to 1,450 feet. It is night-picked by hand, sorted berry by berry, fermented on native yeast, then raised 14 months in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Robert Parker once compared it to Leroy's Romanée St.-Vivant from barrel. California Pinot built like Burgundy. A splurge, and in 2021 a justified one.

Black raspberry, black cherry and mulberry with violets, star anise and garrigue. Full-bodied, with firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity through the core. Long finish with a cool tingle of mint tea.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

The vineyard sits on Goldridge sedimentary soil with northern exposure, cooled by maritime breeze off the Pacific. Morlet works it Burgundian style start to finish: October harvest, punch-downs in tank and Darnajou puncheons, artisan-cooper barrels, no fining, no filtration.
