Paterianakis Melissinos Red 2021

Melissinos Red is Domaine Paterianakis' organic Syrah from Meleses in the hills south of Heraklion, Crete. Certified organic farming, 20 days on the skins, malolactic in barrel, then eight months in French oak on fine lees and another six to eight in bottle before release. Full-bodied at a sane 13%, and the producer claims up to 25 years of cellar life. Cretan Syrah is a real thing. This bottle is the argument.

Deep ruby with purple edges. Red fruit, chocolate, coffee, sweet spice, and vanilla on the nose. Full body, velvety texture, elegant tannins, and a long spiced finish.

The estate pours it with game, braised red meat, hard cheeses, and pasta in spicy tomato sauce. Lamb kleftiko is the move.

Domaine Paterianakis is a family estate at Meleses in central Crete, certified organic for both cultivation and vinification. Fermentation runs in stainless steel, malolactic in barrel, and the wine matures in their underground cellar before release. Decant 30 minutes.
