Pope Valley Winery has one of the oldest working cellars in Napa, a three-story gravity-flow building Ed Haus dug into a hillside starting in 1882. The Eakle family bought it in 1997, and fourth-generation siblings David Eakle and Diana Eakle Hawkins run it now. The 2019 Proprietary Red is 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon off their own Eakle Ranch Estate, dark and silken with a savory edge. This is Napa history in the glass, not a marketing story bolted onto a new label.

Dark fruit, chocolate, sweet florals and pie spice on the nose. Wild blackberry, ripe cherry, a touch of vanilla, pencil lead and dried herb on the palate, with a moderately long finish that leans savory.

Smoked or grilled meats — the winery's own call, and it fits the wine's savory streak.

Ed Haus founded the winery in 1897 as the Burgundy Winery & Olive Oil Factory, hand-digging the cellar out of the hillside. The Eakle family took over in 1997; siblings David Eakle and Diana Eakle Hawkins, fourth-generation Napa natives, now farm the Eakle Ranch Estate that feeds this wine.
