Rarissimo - Dao - Clarete - 2016
$57.99
Rarissimo is a small-batch atelier label from Osvaldo Amado, a Portuguese winemaker with more than three decades in the Dao who set out to make distinctive, limited-run wines under his own name. The Clarete is a traditional Dao style: a pale, light-structured red made from Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Aragonez, destemmed and given only partial skin maceration before fermenting at controlled temperature. It's a style that's nearly disappeared even in Portugal, closer to a dark rose than a modern red, and a genuinely rare find for anyone chasing old-school Iberian wine.
Claret-brown color. Intense aromas of forest floor, spice, wild mushroom and mature tobacco. Soft, elegant and harmonious on the palate, with a long, complex finish.
Built for the table: grilled fish, roast chicken or a lightly seasoned stew -- classic clarete territory.
Osvaldo Amado is one of the Dao's most recognized winemakers, with more than 30 years in the region before launching his own atelier-scale label. Clarete is an old, nearly vanished Dao tradition -- fermented at 24C with only partial skin contact and total destemming, aged in stainless steel rather than oak to keep the pale color and light structure intact.
