Recchia - Valpolicella Ripasso - Classico Superiore - 'Le Muraie' - 2018
$32.00
Recchia has been making wine in Negrar, the heart of Valpolicella, since 1906, over a century in one family's hands. Le Muraie takes its name from the marogne, the dry-stone walls terracing the vineyard's steep slopes. The blend is mostly Corvina Veronese with Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta, Merlot and Croatina, made Ripasso-style: the finished Classico Superiore gets refermented on the leftover lees of the estate's Recioto, picking up extra richness and depth. Falstaff scored the 2018 at 89 points. Built for a cold night and a plate of something braised.
Bright, radiant ruby red with a delicate edge. Aromas of noble wood, ripe strawberry, and wild berries over a base of graphite. Juicy and warming on the palate, with a grippy, slightly bitter finish that keeps it from feeling soft.
Braised short rib, osso buco, aged Grana Padano, the rich, slow-cooked food Valpolicella Ripasso was built for.
The Recchia family has farmed in Negrar since 1906. Le Muraie grows on natural terraces held up by centuries-old dry-stone walls, or marogne, that give the wine its name. The blend leans on Corvina Veronese, rounded out with Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta, Merlot and Croatina.
