Monte Real is Bodegas Riojanas' historic Gran Reserva label, running since 1933 from a winery founded in 1890 in Cenicero. The 1998 is a mature, traditionally-made Rioja, aged the old way: up to 30 months in American oak followed by years resting in bottle before release, which is why it's showing so gracefully now. This isn't a wine you buy for a party -- it's for someone who wants to taste what real bottle age does to Tempranillo, and Wine Enthusiast agreed, giving it 94 points and an Editors' Choice.

Dark red with a pale, bricking rim; pungent spicy nose of cherry, redcurrant and plum with dried herbs and vanillin oak; supple, deep palate of dried cherry, red plum and vanilla with soft, integrated tannins and fresh acidity through a graceful finish.

Slow-roasted lamb, aged Manchego, or a mushroom and thyme dish that won't fight the tertiary notes.

Made from hand-harvested Tempranillo (80%), Mazuelo (15%) and Graciano (5%) grown around Cenicero. Bodegas Riojanas ages Monte Real Gran Reserva up to 30 months in American oak casks, then a minimum of three years in bottle before release -- classic, old-school Rioja aging.
