Rocca delle Macie was founded in 1973 by Italo Zingarelli, the producer behind the spaghetti western They Call Me Trinity, and is now run by his son Sergio. In 1998 the family bought the Campomaccione estate in the Maremma, eighty hectares built around Sangiovese with a little Cabernet Sauvignon blended in. Morellino di Scansano is Maremma's answer to Chianti: looser, earthier, built for the table rather than the cellar. Wine Enthusiast gave the 2021 a 90. Great house red for pizza night.

Brilliant ruby red. Ripe red fruit up front, with mushroom, soil and woodsy undertones. Balanced, smooth, full-bodied palate. Long, persistent finish of ripened fruit.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

Rocca delle Macie is a six-estate Tuscan house; Campomaccione, bought in 1998, is their outpost in the Maremma near Scansano. Eighty hectares planted mostly to Sangiovese. Sister property Casamaria sits nearby. The rest of the Zingarelli holdings are four Chianti Classico estates.
