Segla - Margaux - 2015
$100.99
Segla is the second wine of Chateau Rauzan-Segla, a second-growth Margaux estate Chanel has owned since 1994. It's made from the estate's younger vines, average age 30 years versus 38 for the Grand Vin, and built to drink sooner. The 2015 blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot with a splash of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged in 25% new oak. This is Margaux perfume and precision at a real-world price, without the Grand Vin markup.
Fragrant and precise, with mineral-edged blackberry, blueberry and cold flint. Medium body, a juicy attack, a tingle of spice on the tip of the tongue, fine tension and real persistence on the finish.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Rauzan-Segla's first vines went in the ground in 1661; the chateau split off from neighboring Rauzan-Gassies in 1763 and was classified Deuxieme Grand Cru in 1855. Chanel bought the estate in 1994 and has steadily raised quality since.
