Napa royalty, full stop. Hillside Select is Shafer's flagship: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from steep, rocky volcanic vineyards behind the winery in the Stags Leap District, aged 32 months in 100% new French oak. The 2019 season was long and even, and critics are calling this a 30 to 40 year wine. Dense, layered, built like a monument. This is the bottle for the serious collector, the milestone anniversary, the night the news is genuinely good.

Cassis, black plum, dark loam and pencil shavings on the nose. Full bodied, rich and concentrated, with dense, polished tannin and a ripe, powerful, seriously long finish.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.

John Shafer left Chicago publishing in 1972 for these hillsides on the eastern edge of the Stags Leap District. The rocky volcanic slopes yield small berries and intense concentration, and only the estate's best hillside lots make the Hillside Select cut.
