This is the Alexander Valley bottling, not the pricier Napa Valley Silver Oak, the register price lines up with Alexander Valley's roughly $99 release, nowhere near Napa Valley's $150-plus. Silver Oak's been a Sonoma benchmark since 1972, built on 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. It ages in a 50/50 split of new and once-used American oak from the family's own cooperage in Missouri. Decanter called it a compelling, muscular Cabernet with drinking pleasure into 2047.

Red cherry, raspberry, blackberry, iris, vanilla and clove on the nose. Ruby-colored with lively acid, a mid-palate lift of black currant and baking spice, and a long, fruit-driven finish carrying umami and crushed stone.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.

Silver Oak ages every wine in barrels built at The Oak, the family's own cooperage in Higbee, Missouri, rare vertical integration for a wine producer. The Alexander Valley fruit gets 50% new, 50% second-use American oak, giving it a toastier, sweeter oak signature than the Napa Valley bottling's French oak regime.
