Worth flagging: Snowden retired the Reserve Cabernet name after the 2013 vintage and replaced it with Cabernet Sauvignon Brothers Vineyard, now the family's top wine, priced in the same $98 to $99 range as this register listing, so that's almost certainly what's in the bottle even if the old name stuck on the shelf tag. It comes from a two-acre block at 850 feet on the eastern slope of Palomino Hill, blended with 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot from neighboring single-acre sites on the family's Napa Valley ranch.

Violets and cherries up front, then tobacco, cedar and pencil shavings. Bold cherry carries through a medium-to-full body, silky texture, fine-grained tannin and a softly dusty finish.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.

Wayne and Virginia Snowden planted Cabernet Sauvignon in the early 1960s on a long-abandoned orchard site, using grafting wood from Nathan Fay's original Stags Leap District vineyard, and fine-tuned their trellising with help from Stag's Leap's Warren Winiarski. The family bottled its first vintage under its own label in 1993.
