St. Supéry's Rutherford Estate sits on ground the Skalli family bought in 1985, three years after Robert Skalli first landed in Napa; the winery opened in 1989 and Chanel bought it outright in 2015. This 2018 Merlot is 88% Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot rounding it out, Rutherford fruit, built with real structure. Jeb Dunnuck gave it 92 points, praising its purity and depth. Good for a dinner where you want a Merlot that doesn't apologize for showing up.

Black plum, black cherry, graphite, milk chocolate and black pepper, with a thread of vanilla from the toasted oak. Juicy blackberry on the palate, a cocoa-powder texture, smooth tannins, long finish.

Classic matches for Merlot: Roast chicken, pork tenderloin, mushroom anything, herbed potatoes.

Robert Skalli bought the Rutherford property in 1985; the estate sits in the heart of the AVA known for "Rutherford dust," the dusty, earthy signature Napa old-timers still argue about. Chanel has owned the winery since 2015.
