The original Super Tuscan. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet on the Bolgheri coast because he loved Bordeaux, and the 1968 debut ended up rewriting Italian wine law. The 2018 marks fifty years of Sassicaia: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged 20 to 25 months in French oak barriques with a small share of American oak. This is the graceful, medium-bodied side of the estate, all currant, cedar and iron. Buy it for the collector who already owns everything from Napa.

Crushed blackcurrant, iron and florals with wild herbs and tobacco. Graceful and medium-bodied. Red plum, cedar and graphite on the palate, fine tannins, long mineral finish. Evolves 15 to 25 years.

Bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragu over pappardelle, or a plank of aged pecorino.

Tenuta San Guido farms stony hillsides near Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, terrain the Incisa della Rocchetta family likened to Graves. Sassicaia carries its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, the only Italian DOC held by a single estate.
