Tenuta San Guido - Sassicaia - 2019

Sassicaia at full throttle. The 2019 is one of the most decorated releases in the estate's history: 100 points from Decanter, 99 from James Suckling, 98 from Wine Advocate. Same recipe as always, 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc from the stony hills above Bolgheri, around two years in French oak barriques, one third new. Deeper and more layered than the 2018 sitting next to it on our shelf. This is the vintage to bury in the cellar for a decade.

Blackcurrant, violet, crushed stone and pencil shavings. Concentrated yet restrained, layered palate framed by fine tannins and bright acidity. Red cherry, graphite and a saline, iron-tinged finish. Drinks 2025 to 2045.

Rosemary lamb chops, braised short ribs, or porcini risotto once it has had some air.

The Incisa della Rocchetta family planted Cabernet at Tenuta San Guido in the 1940s and sold the first commercial vintage in 1968. The wine now holds its own single-estate appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
