Tooth & Nail - The Possessor - RB - 2021

The Possessor is part of Tooth & Nail's Audubon Series, named for John James Audubon's paintings of two red-tailed hawks battling over territory, a fitting image for this wine. The 2021 is a Bordeaux-style blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petite Sirah, 6% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot, aged 14 months in 35% new French oak. Tooth & Nail is the Paso Robles winery built by Rob Murray, who farmed the estate himself in the Willow Creek District. Pour this with a ribeye, or cellar it a few more years.

Blackcurrant, cigar box, pencil shavings and violet lead the nose, with integrated herbal notes underneath. Full-bodied and structured, ripe fruit tempered by graphite, fine-grained tannins and seamless acidity carrying into a long, nuanced finish.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

Rob Murray built Tooth & Nail from nothing, farming the Willow Creek District estate himself in a stretch of Paso Robles that doesn't give easy fruit. The Audubon Series takes its name and label art from naturalist John James Audubon, this bottling borrowing his painting of two red-tailed hawks fighting for sole possession of their territory.
