Trefethen - Dragon's Tooth - 2019

Trefethen grows everything for this wine on its Main Ranch estate in Napa's Oak Knoll District, and Dragon's Tooth is where the family breaks from Cabernet orthodoxy. The 2019 leads with 40% Malbec, backed by 32% Petit Verdot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot, aged 18 months in 51% new oak. Dark, spicy and generous, with acidity that keeps it moving. Malbec-led Napa at this level is genuinely rare. That is exactly the point.
Blackberry, plum and boysenberry with clove, nutmeg and cedar. Generous palate, lively acidity, youthful tannins, long concentrated finish. 14.3% alcohol.
The winery chef pours it with four-cheese ravioli, smoked ham and greens. Smoky, peppery dishes suit it.
One hundred percent Main Ranch fruit from the Oak Knoll District, the cooler southern end of Napa Valley, farmed sustainably by the Trefethen family. Harvest for the 2019 ran September 18 to October 23 after a rollercoaster season that finished warm and sunny.
