Valle Reale is a mountainside estate in Abruzzo founded in 1999 by Leonardo Pizzolo, a Verona native who found this remote, high-elevation site and planted around an old family vineyard. More than half its 46 hectares are certified organic and the estate leans biodynamic, working five distinct vineyard sites. The 2016 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the producer's own straightforward, food-ready bottling: bright ruby color, juicy fruit, real acid. Not the jug Montepulciano you're used to, this comes from serious mountain farming in a region that mostly doesn't bother.

Blueberry, cherry, licorice and sweet spice on the nose. Medium-bodied palate with plentiful acidity and a clean, pleasant finish, built for the table, not the cellar.

Meatballs in tomato sauce, eggplant parmigiana, or risotto ai funghi, the producer's own suggested pairings.

Founded in 1999 by Leonardo Pizzolo on a mountainside site in Abruzzo, Valle Reale farms 46 hectares across five vineyards, Popoli, San Calisto, Sant'Eusanio, Capestrano and The Convent, more than half certified organic and worked with biodynamic principles and wild yeast fermentation.
