Kirk Venge grew up in Rutherford under his father Nils Venge, one of Napa's most decorated winemakers, before taking over the family label in 2008 and buying his own ground the same year: Bone Ash Vineyard, 12.5 acres in the Calistoga foothills of the Palisades. The name comes from the volcanic ash that dusts up off the soil in the dry season. This 2019 is a single-vineyard Cabernet built for people who already know what Napa cult wine tastes like.
Deep ruby magenta with blue and black berry fruit, jammy jelly-jar notes, French oak vanillin and earth. Cassis, forest floor, roasted coffee, graphite and iron on the palate. Plush tannins, moderate acidity, long finish.
Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.
Vines here average 25-plus years, dry-farmed or close to it, cane-pruned to Cabernet clones 7 and 8 with roots dug deep into volcanic soil. Venge farms the property organically and regeneratively, with minimal irrigation forcing the vines to work for concentration and complexity.
