Venge - Igneous - Cabernet Sauvignon - 2021
$139.99
Kirk Venge is Nils Venge's son and one of Napa's top Cabernet hands in his own right; he bought the family's Calistoga vineyard outright in 2008 and has run it since. Igneous is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon pulled from three separate blocks on that Calistoga estate, aged 20 months in half new French oak. Decanter scored the 2021 in the 93 to 95 range. This is dense, structured Calistoga fruit that should hold for fifteen to twenty years, no rush to open it tonight.
Opaque purple. Cassis, iodine, iron and chocolate up front, blackberry preserve and currant syrup, with vanillin and earth appearing as it opens. Full-bodied, firm polished tannins, good mineral-edged finish.
Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.
Venge Vineyards traces back to Nils Venge, who left the family wine business to study viticulture at UC Davis and bought a 17-acre Oakville vineyard in 1976. His son Kirk took over the Calistoga estate outright in 2008; Igneous comes from three blocks in the eastern foothills of the Palisades.
