Venge - Silencieux - Cabernet Sauvignon - 2022

Kirk Venge's Napa Cabernet for drinking while the single-vineyard bottles sleep. Silencieux pulls valley-floor fruit from Rutherford, Oakville and Calistoga, ferments on native yeasts, and spends 18 months in French oak, 60 percent new. The 2022 blend runs 92 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with dashes of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Plush, dark and unmistakably Napa at a price the address rarely allows.

Cassis, anise, blackberry and roasted coffee on the nose. Velvety and plump, with cocoa, blueberry and kirsch. Firm, balanced tannins and a lengthy finish. 14.9 percent.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.

Kirk Venge sources Silencieux from valley-floor sites, primarily Rutherford, Oakville and Calistoga. Fruit is hand-picked, sorted on a Pellenc system, kept 20 to 35 days on skins, fermented with native yeasts and aged 18 months in 60 percent new French oak.
