Vite Colte - ‘Spezie’ - Barbaresco Riserva - 2015
$60.00
Spezie is Vite Colte's reserve-tier Barbaresco, made only in strong vintages and held back roughly a decade before release, so the 2015 is arriving at the shop already showing some maturity. Vite Colte is a quality-focused growers' cooperative based in the town of Barolo, working with about 190 farmers across the Langhe, and this bottling comes from Barbaresco fruit grown in fossil marl and clay. It's a serious, structured Nebbiolo for someone who already knows what Barbaresco should taste like. Pour it with braised short rib.
Ripe red and black fruit, cherry, plum, violets, tobacco and baking spice -- cinnamon, clove, black pepper. Firm, gripping tannin carries through a long, warm finish with a balsamic edge.
Braised short rib or a peppercorn-crusted roast -- it needs fat and time on the table.
Vite Colte is a quality-focused cooperative of roughly 190 growers based in the town of Barolo, working vineyards across the Langhe. Spezie is made only in the best vintages and aged through malolactic fermentation in oak for about two years, plus another year in bottle, which is why it only reaches market after a decade.
