Chateau de Beaucastel - Chateauneuf du Pape - 2021
$115.99
Beaucastel is one of only a handful of Chateauneuf-du-Pape estates that plants and vinifies all thirteen permitted grape varieties, and the Perrin family has farmed biodynamically here since 1974, decades before it was fashionable. The 2021 leans on more Mourvedre than usual, around 40% of the blend, which gives it the estate's signature savory backbone. Deep ruby-purple with game, truffle and pepper alongside the fruit, this needs cellar time and rewards patience. Famille Perrin has run the property since 1909, four and five generations deep.
Ripe red and blue fruit, spice, game, truffled earth and ground pepper on the nose. Full-bodied entry with sweet cherry fruit, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity; iron and Provencal spice through the mid-palate into a long, spicy finish.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Pierre Perrin took over the estate in 1909; the family converted to organic farming in 1950 and biodynamics in 1974, among the first in the Southern Rhone to do so. All thirteen Chateauneuf-du-Pape varieties grow on the property, with Mourvedre playing an unusually large role in both this bottling and the prestige Hommage a Jacques Perrin cuvee.
