2016 was a declared vintage across the Douro, and Fonseca's is one of the standouts of a strong year for Port. Deep, almost inky in the glass, full-bodied and powerful with the structure to age for decades, Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast both scored it 97, James Suckling went to 98. This is a wine for the cellar as much as the table; buy it now and it will still be improving in twenty years.
Black fruit laced with embers, clove and bay leaf. Sweet, lively entry with ginger and curry leaf over compact black fruit, plums, florals and black olive. Full-bodied and tannic with a supple, velvety texture and extraordinary length.
A wedge of Stilton or another aggressive blue, or straight dark chocolate at the end of a long dinner.
